Cultures Unites Us More Than Divide Us

Updated: Jul 29, 2023

Culture week is one of the most exciting events to attend at USIU-Africa (United States International University Africa).

USIU Africa was established in 1969 as the Nairobi Campus, a San Diego, California based institution. In 2001, USIU merged with the California School of Professional Psychology to form Alliant International University.

USIU-Africa is known to be one of the most diverse universities in Kenya with over 150 nationalities being represented that includes both students and faculty.

To celebrate this diversity, the university hosts a three-day event each year providing each community an opportunity to showcase their cultures; through food, music, fashion, art and performances.

Each year, the spectacle becomes more dazzling and elaborate, attracting greater crowds and inspiring amazement. It brings inclusivity and togetherness among different cultures represented and showcases the many distinct communities within the university.

As an Alumni of the university, I was excited to attend this year’s event which took place on March 13th – 16th, 2023.

Having attended my last culture week in 2016 just before graduating, I was inspired to direct a mini documentary about the event.

The three-day event is a mix of traditional food, attire, jewellery, flags, artefacts, parade, and the last segment was the culture night award show. The award show celebrates the accomplishments that each culture brings to the university and the community as a whole.

The event was a lot of fun with so much culture from India, Europe, US, Canada and Africa. The cuisines from all those many places with music, fashion, jewellery, body art, dancing and the closing ceremony where students are awarded of their many contributions to the university and the community.

It was exciting to see how much has changed since 2016 but it was also lovely to see how much has remained the same.

It’s a good thing that the event is open to other attendees beside those of the university. This event plays multiple roles. It seeks to celebrate cultural diversity, foster unity and collaboration, entertain as well as educate the community.

If you happen to be in Nairobi in March, I encourage you to attend the event and see for yourself.
